Appointments and your first visit
What to expect when you are planning a visit at Landmark Dental Care in Truro.
How can I book an appointment?
Call 902-893-2919, email reception@landmarkdentalcare.ca, or use our online contact page. If you are not sure which appointment to request, tell our team what is concerning you and they can help direct you.
What happens at a first dental visit?
We discuss your concerns, health history and goals, complete an appropriate examination, and explain relevant findings and next steps. Depending on your needs, diagnostic images may be recommended.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring government identification, your insurance or benefit information if applicable, a current medication list, and relevant medical or dental history. If you are using CDCP coverage, bring your member information, coverage start date and co-payment details.
How do I know which service I need?
You do not need to diagnose yourself. Contact the office and describe your concern. The team can help determine the most appropriate type of visit.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive with enough time to complete or update forms and share any changes to your health history, medications or insurance information.
Can I ask questions during my appointment?
Yes. Questions are an important part of understanding your oral health, options, expected costs and next steps.
Common questions
Scheduling and office policies
A few practical details for planning care and keeping appointments on track.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Please give the office at least 48 hours notice whenever possible. This allows the team to offer the time to another patient.
What if I am late for my appointment?
Call the office as soon as possible. Depending on the appointment and the time available, the team will let you know whether the visit can continue or needs to be rescheduled.
Do you see families and children?
Landmark Dental Care is a family general dental practice. Contact the team when booking so the appointment can be planned around each family member’s needs.
What if I have dental anxiety?
Tell the team when booking and when you arrive. Explaining concerns in advance gives the office an opportunity to make the visit clearer and more comfortable.
Common questions
Cost, insurance and payment questions
Clear cost conversations help you make informed decisions before treatment begins.
Do you accept dental insurance?
We can discuss your dental benefits and help you understand what information may be needed. Insurance plans differ, and coverage is determined by your plan rather than by the dental office.
What if I do not have dental insurance?
Contact the office to discuss your care needs and available payment information. We explain recommended treatment and expected costs before proceeding whenever possible.
How much will my treatment cost?
Costs vary by the service, the findings and the treatment plan. The team can discuss an estimate and any expected patient portion before treatment begins.
Will my insurance cover the full cost?
Not necessarily. Your plan may have deductibles, annual limits, exclusions, frequency limits or different coverage levels. Confirm details with your insurer and ask the office about the expected balance.
Can I ask about costs before agreeing to treatment?
Yes. Ask what the recommended treatment involves, what your plan may cover, what is not covered and what amount you may need to pay directly.
Common questions
Preventive and general dental care
Regular care is planned around your oral health, history, habits and individual risk factors.
How often should I see the dentist?
There is no single schedule for everyone. Your dentist may recommend a recall interval based on your oral health, history, risk factors and the care needed.
How often should I have a dental cleaning?
Cleaning frequency depends on your oral health, gum condition, buildup, home care and risk factors. Your dental team can recommend an interval that fits your needs.
Why do I need dental X-rays?
X-rays may show areas that cannot be seen during a visual examination and can support diagnosis or treatment planning when clinically indicated.
Are digital dental X-rays safe?
Dental X-rays use a controlled amount of radiation and are recommended when the expected information may help with care. Tell the team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush or floss?
Bleeding can be associated with gum inflammation, but it should not be ignored. Share it with the dental team so they can assess your gums and discuss home care.
What can I do to protect my teeth at home?
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, follow the advice from your dental team, and contact the office if you notice pain, swelling, bleeding or a change in your mouth.
Common questions
Treatment and technology
Learn more about common conversations around restorative care and technology-supported services.
What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing or replacing damaged or missing tooth structure and supporting oral function. The appropriate option depends on your examination and goals.
What is the difference between a filling and a crown?
A filling repairs a smaller area of tooth damage. A crown covers and protects a tooth that needs more support. Your dentist will assess which option is appropriate.
What is an intraoral camera?
An intraoral camera captures close-up images inside the mouth. These images can help the team and patient discuss selected findings, but they do not replace a complete dental examination or other imaging when needed.
What is a Cavitron cleaning?
A Cavitron is an ultrasonic scaling device that dental professionals may use to help remove plaque, tartar and stains during selected cleanings. Your hygienist chooses the instruments and approach for your needs.
When might 3D CBCT imaging be considered?
CBCT may be considered when a three-dimensional view could add useful information for a particular clinical question or treatment plan. It is not needed for every patient or appointment.
What happens if I need more than one treatment?
The team can explain the priorities, sequence, timing and expected costs so you can understand the plan and decide on the next step.
Common questions
Urgent dental concerns
If something changes suddenly, contact the office promptly so the team can help determine the next step.
What should I do if I have severe tooth pain?
Call the office promptly and describe the pain, when it began and any swelling, fever, injury or change to a filling or crown. Do not place aspirin directly on your gums or tooth.
What if my face or gums are swollen?
Contact the office promptly for guidance. If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?
This is time-sensitive. Contact a dentist or emergency service immediately for guidance, and handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately.
What if a filling or crown falls out?
Save the restoration if possible, avoid chewing on that side and contact the office. Do not use household glue in your mouth.
When should I call 911 or go to an emergency department?
Seek emergency medical care immediately for difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading swelling, or a life-threatening injury.
Common questions
Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)
The CDCP is a Government of Canada program. Confirm current eligibility, coverage and clinic arrangements before booking.
What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
The CDCP helps make oral health care more affordable for eligible Canadian residents. It is not the same as free dental care or private dental insurance.
Does Landmark Dental Care accept CDCP patients?
Please contact Landmark Dental Care before booking so the team can confirm current CDCP participation, appointment availability and billing arrangements for your situation.
Who may qualify for the CDCP?
Applicants generally need no access to private dental insurance or coverage, filed the required Canadian tax return, an adjusted family net income below $90,000, and Canadian residency for tax purposes. Confirm the current rules through the Government of Canada.
Is dental care free under the CDCP?
No. Depending on your adjusted family net income, the plan may cover part of eligible costs at CDCP-established fees. A co-payment, additional clinic charge or non-covered service may still apply.
Are all dental services covered by the CDCP?
No. Coverage depends on the service, clinical criteria, frequency limits, plan rules and any preauthorization requirement. Ask about expected coverage and your portion before treatment begins.
What should I bring for a CDCP appointment?
Bring your CDCP member information or enrolment letter, coverage start date, co-payment level, government identification, medication list and relevant health information.
Where can I check the latest CDCP information?
Visit the Government of Canada’s official CDCP website for current eligibility, application, renewal and coverage information. You can also visit our CDCP page for a Landmark-focused overview.
